Shopping cart handle

Our client, the design studio Tatic, commissioned us to create a 3D model of a newly designed shopping cart handle. The design included numerous variants of the handle, featuring an optional mount for a multimedia display, cup holders, advertising space and ergonomically shaped side handles.

Our task was to adapt the handle to various shopping cart models while integrating existing components such as a coin lock. The highest standards of surface quality and precision had to be met to ensure stability and ergonomic design for everyday use.

Modeling/Surfacing

The design was realized in Solidworks to enable direct integration into the manufacturer’s CAD workflow. Design sketches and Rhino 3D data served as the basis. The handle components were developed parametrically in several detailing steps, in close consultation with the customer. Geometry was shared with the engineering team via STEP data export and import.

Design for Manufacturing (design to specification)

The design was implemented strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications: we took into account draft angles, mold parting lines, and wall thicknesses as specified. The draft angle for the handle horn presented a particular challenge. Through close collaboration between the design team and the mold specialists, a solution was found that compromised neither design, ergonomics, nor manufacturability.

b-surfacing and overmould creation

We supplied the A and B surfaces of the handle for the production of the injection-moulding tools, taking into account the required parting lines and wall thickness variations for two-component injection moulding.

parametric workflow

Thanks to a structured model tree and the consistent application of parametric design principles, we were able to adapt the design to two additional handle sizes in the follow-up project in a very short time.
